Meet Jim Whitcomb: Corporate Finance, M&A Managing Director: Cognos USA
A Global Perspective on Corporate Finance and Innovation
With a career shaped by international experience and a deep understanding of global markets, Jim Whitcomb stands out as a seasoned investment banker at Westbury Group, Cognos’ US partner.
Advising emerging companies at the forefront of innovation, Jim brings decades of cross-border expertise to strategic transactions across a range of industries.
A US citizen with a truly global upbringing, Jim spent much of his early life living in Japan, Australia, the United Kingdom, Belgium and Brazil.
This international exposure laid the foundation for a career defined by adaptability, cultural awareness and a keen sense of global economic dynamics.
Outside of work, Jim shares a rich family life with his wife Havilande. Together, they have three grown children whose careers span entrepreneurship, renewable energy investment banking and urban planning, making for lively discussions around economics and sustainability at family gatherings.
Building Diverse Cultural Understanding
Jim’s early years were shaped by constant movement across continents. His formative school years were spent in England, where he was educated within the British system before returning to the United States for university.
There, he pursued a degree in history, developing a strong interest in international relations and economics – interests that would later define his professional path. Recognising the need to deepen his financial expertise, Jim went on to complete an MBA, setting the stage for a career in investment banking.
Early Exposure to Cross-Border Finance
Jim began his professional journey at Chase Manhattan Bank, working in its International Department in New York and later São Paulo. In Brazil, he advised large multinational corporations, gaining early exposure to cross-border finance and emerging markets.
After completing his MBA, Jim transitioned to Wall Street, joining a firm that later merged with Lehman Brothers. There, he worked on a wide range of M&A, equity and debt transactions, building a strong foundation in corporate finance.
A pivotal chapter in Jim’s career came when he relocated to London with his family to work at Lehman Brothers International. During this time, he advised on major transactions, including a follow-on equity offering for BP and privatisation planning for Crédit Lyonnais and the largest consumer products company in Hungary. He also contributed to capital markets transactions and high-profile deals such as the IPO in Geneva of Safra Republic Holdings.
Jim later led coverage of the European consumer products sector, advising companies such as Diageo (formed from the merger of Grand Metropolitan and Guinness) and supporting strategic transactions including Allied-Domecq’s acquisition of Dunkin’ Donuts.
Returning to New York, Jim joined Chemical Securities (now part of JPMorgan Chase), focusing on emerging markets. His work included advising on a bank merger in Mexico and a cross-border acquisition for Hearst Corporation in Brazil’s media sector.
In 2005, Jim moved into boutique advisory, joining The Chart Group where he led international M&A transactions, including acquisitions in the food and beverage sector and advisory work in Canada.
Seeking a better work-life balance, Jim joined Westbury Group in Westport, CT in 2015, eliminating his Manhattan commute while continuing to work on impactful deals.
Today, Jim advises clients across sectors including consumer products, aerospace and advanced manufacturing.
Westbury’s membership in Cognos Global Partners, (previously International Corporate Finance Group (ICFG)) since 2020 has further strengthened its cross-border capabilities, enabling Jim and his colleagues to connect clients with global opportunities and partners and tap into valuable expertise in other markets.
Expertise and Added Value
Jim brings deep expertise in M&A and capital raising. His career has been defined by cross-border transactions, giving him a nuanced understanding of how to position deals in a global context.
He believes that success in international M&A depends heavily on access to a well-connected global network. For lower and middle-market companies, where cross-border interest is often strongest, this ability to reach international buyers and sellers and articulate strategic value is essential.
Through the Cognos Global Partners network, Jim mobilises his and his team’s expertise across geographies, delivering tailored solutions that align with clients’ strategic ambitions.
From global boardrooms to open waters, Jim Whitcomb’s journey reflects a career built on international insight, strategic thinking and a genuine passion for connecting people, ideas and capital flows across borders.
